Faith-Based Community Organizing
The national faith-based community organizing group known as People Improving Communities through Organizing (PICO) is creating an interfaith network of congregation in Philadelphia. Pastor Hynicka is a member of the Sponsoring Committee and is providing leadership in putting the Philadelphia group together. The basic goal is to create a network of local organizing committees – one in each congregation – that identifies community issues and concerns, conducts research on those issues and concerns and designs an action to secure significant commitments to address those issues and concerns. Local work is primary; however, with time, the local organizing committees will connect to address city-wide, state-wide and national issues. Success comes by getting hundreds and eventually thousands of like-minded people in a room with the people who have the authority to make change. A city-wide training for 5 to 10 persons from each of the congregations represented on the Sponsoring Committee is set for Saturday, October 2, 2010. If you are interested in this effort and the training, please contact Pastor Robin by telephone (215) 498 3718 or email robin@archsteetumc.org.
